Solaire boardwalk damaged by fallen tree

The popular Silaire Wood Boardwalk in Graignamanagh has been damaged by a fallen tree after the long period of heavy rain saturated the wood and weakened the tree roots. It is hoped that repairs can be made after the tree has been removed from the river which could take over a month depending how long it takes the Office of Public works (OPW) and Waterways Ireland to mobilise the required equipment barge which is already fully engaged in ongoing river and canal maintenance.

The boardwalk is a feature of the wood that is much used by the local community and was only officially opened last October by the President of ireland, Michael D higgins, after completion of the Kilkenny Leadership funded project which developed and regenerated the ancient wood forming a looped walk which now forms the daily walking pattern for an increasing number locals and visitors.
