Two Kilkenny hurlers recently paid a visit to Castlecomer Community School in support of the Ready for Reading Literacy programme.

Tommy Walsh and Conor Fogarty arrived into the first year classes to shrieks of delight and loud cheers.

Both men spoke very eloquently about the importance of reading and what it means to them.

Tommy and Conor drove home the point that it doesn’t matter if you are not an excellent reader or if you find it difficult, the secret is to keep at it and never give up. Much to the delight of the students, the lads then signed their journals and the copies of ‘Alone on the Wide Wide Sea’ – the book given to them as part of the Literacy launch.

The visit was a hugely positive experience for all involved and was a great boost to what is a very important initiative in the school. All first year students have taken part in a targeted reading programme in class and at home with their families.
