Help us to help Santa help kids is the urgent message being put out this week by the Fr. McGrath Family Resource Centre. The family centre is making an urgent appeal for good quality second hand toys in response to the unprecedented number of families who have approached them for help this Christmas.

When Christmas should be a time for families to enjoy simple pleasures like spending quality time together and sharing simple pleasures for too many families this year the financial burden is dampening the true spirit of Christmas.

“Many more families than usual are asking for help this year and are looking for ways to get through Christmas without putting themselves into even more debt,” Wendy Taylor, Family Services Manager at the Centre said.

“The dramatic rise in the numbers of families desperate for help with Santa this Christmas has forced us to consider launching this appeal to see if we can take some of the pressure off parents and Santa,” she added.

The Family Centre is appealing for good quality second hand toys, quality children’s books, computer, Xbox or PlayStation 3 games, children’s bikes, board games or any other donation that might make a special gift for a child on Christmas day.

“We are hoping that families will respond generously by donating toys and items no longer used by their children, whilst making room for Santa’s new gifts, and we would really welcome any quality items people can donate,” Wenday said.

Wendy noted that many families who became members of the Butts Community Savings Bank running from the Centre every Thursday night have ensured they won’t have to turn to anyone to borrow to make their family Christmas possible this year. On Thursday evening the Butts Community Bank will hand over a six figure sum to their nearly 40 members, many of them children, and they expect that nearly all of those savings will be spent in the local economy. Toy appeal donations can be dropped in to the Neighbourhood Hall on the Butts Green, Kilkenny,or the Fr. McGrath Family Centre or people can ring Wendy or Kadie on 056 7751988 ext 7 for details or collection.
