Kilkenny rally driver Craig Breen has emerged unharmed from a high-speed car crash in which his co-driver Gareth Roberts was tragically killed.

The accident happened on Saturday during Stage Eight of the Targa Florio Rally in Sicily, when the pair’s Peugeot 207 left the road about five miles from the starting line. A guard rail entered the car on the right side, where the 24-year-old Roberts was seated.

Emergency crews responded immediately, but the Welshman died instantly. Breen was taken to hospital as a precaution, but the Slieverue man was not injured.

Breen and Roberts had been in sixth position in the rally when the accident occurred. The event was cancelled following the crash, as a mark of respect to the Roberts family.
