THE Mayor of Kilkenny Councillor David Fitzgerald will become a member of Kilkenny County Council, having been co-opted onto the council at a party meeting last Friday.

His Fine Gael Party colleague, Jim Leahy, will be co-opted onto Kilkenny Borough Council. Both men ran unopposed for their respective seats.

Party members met to cast their votes at a private ballot on Friday evening in the Clubhouse Hotel, to decide who should fill the two local authority seats vacated by former Cllr Betty Manning. Ms Manning, a former Mayor of Kilkenny, resigned both her borough and county council seats with immediate effect last month.

Jim Leahy, who previously ran for election to the borough council as an independent candidate, joined the Fine Gael Party in 2009. He is from the St John’s area.

Mayor Fitzgerald is already a member of Kilkenny Borough Council. His term of mayoral office is due to expire at the end of this month.

The borough council will meet this Thursday, June 21 to elect a new Mayor of the City. Meanwhile, the county council will meet on June 29 to elect a new Cathaoirleach.
