Barnstorm Theatre Company is appealing to the local business community to sponsor a bus trip for a local school to an upcoming production.
The cost of running buses is preventing children from accessing the arts locally according to Barnstorm’s Manager Vincent Dempsey.
“Kilkenny schools that cannot walk to the city venues are at a distinct disadvantage in accessing arts events. The cost of transport on top of ticket price often makes it untenable, which is a pity as all children should have the right to access arts experiences. ”
Earlier this year the Ministers for Education and for Arts jointly launched the Arts in Education Charter promoting the provision of arts experiences to children of school age.
Barnstorm Theatre Company’s survey last year showed that County Kilkenny schools are
experiencing a major obstacle to attending arts events – the cost of transport. 98% of
respondents said the cost of buses and asking parents for money were the first and
second most important barriers to attending arts events.
Barnstorm is issuing a callout to businesses to help defray the cost of getting children to
the theatre by sponsoring a school in their area. Barnstorm’s new play for children The Ice Child premieres in the Watergate Theatre on February 27. This offers an opportunity for businesses to offer sponsorship. For more information contact 7751266.
