FORMER Lord Mayor of Kilkenny and Councillor Betty Manning has announced her intention to step down from her positions held on both Kilkenny Borough and County Councils respectively.

Councillor Manning has a lengthy CV in terms of positions held in public office. As well as being a member of the two local authorities, she has been both Lord Mayor and Deputy Mayor of Kilkenny in the past.

Cllr Manning’s term of Mayoral office was marked by an effort to be more inclusive of marginalised groups and those on the fringes of society. She was also an active proponent of initiatives such as the city walls project and Tidy Towns.

After the death of her husband Tom in 2003, the Fine Gael councillor took a more involved role with the family business, Manning Travel, which she continues to run with her son Des.
