King Henry the ninth returned to Kilkenny to an historic homecoming - the first time ever the senior hurlers were feted in Nowlan Park.
Twenty thousand fans pakced the new stand and terrace sections to see their heroes as Shefflin, holder of nine All-Ireland medals and the only player to secure all on the field of play was honoured by adoring fans.
The reception, hosted by Kilkenny Borough Council, has traditionally been held at various public venues in the city.
But in a break with tradition this year, the decision was made for the homecoming to be staged in Nowlan Park.
