MINISTER Phil Hogan told local public representatives in the Town Hall last Thursday evening that he has ‘no plans to abolish the borough council’.

“The Borough Council will continue in place with a smaller number of elected representatives who will also be the area members of the County Council. The title of the city as Kilkenny City will continue in place, the title of Mayor of Kilkenny City will continue in place, but the area of Kilkenny City will be expanded and will include its environs.

“The Borough Council will continue to have its traditional monthly meeting to do city business and will now also do environs and electoral area business, so as you can see reports of the death of the Borough Council are I am pleased to say unfounded,” he added.

Mayor of Kilkenny Sean oHargain remarked that he ‘looked forward to clarification about what the Minister said about how the plans for local government will evolve.”
