A STATE-OF-THE-ART community centre in Mullinavat has been granted planning permission and fundraising for the remaining cost of the project is now getting into full swing.

Over 130 people attended a meeting at The Rising Sun pub on Friday. Chairman of the Mullinavat Community Group, Mr Tom Duggan explained that the planned community centre would include a sports hall, changing rooms, multi-purpose indoor sports halls, kitchen facilities, meeting room and a library. He also confirmed that the committee had negotiated the sale of the site, which is located in the grounds of the primary school, from the diocese.

The total cost of the project is estimated to be in the region of €800,000. A Leader grant of €255,000 has been secured and a further €185,000 has been raised through the community lottery.

“The purpose of the meeting is to update people and bring them up to date on developments. We hope that work will start mid summer. The centre will serve the needs of the community and will be of great benefit to the children of the local primary school who have no indoor facilities.

“The meeting was very well supported and it was great to see such a big attendance which helped to bring the project alive. We got a real boost from all the positivity at the meeting,” added Mr Duggan.
