As details of Budget 2013 filled the airwaves, the sight of Paddy Kavanagh and Geoff Smith from Kilkenny Borough Council arriving into the reception area of the radio station with a giant Douglas Fir provided an antidote to talk of cuts.

The tree was to be given away to a school, club or organisation and at 9am the next day, the call went out on The Sue Nunn Show for listeners to ring in and pitch for the tree. Breda was first up, eager to bring the tree to the green in Oak Hill, Castlecomer.

She was followed by Mary from Tullahought Development Association and Annette from Ossory Park. The calls kept coming and last up was Jane Dowling, principal of St Patrick’s School, who enthused about the fun the children would have decorating the tree together. Listeners voted, the text line buckled under the pressure and at two minutes to the end of the show, St Patrick’s School was the clear winner.

Paddy Kavanagh and Geoff Smith jumped straight into their truck and delivered the tree to celebrating staff and students at St Patrick’s.
