The emergency departed at St Luke’s Hospital in Kilkenny was evacuated - due to a temporary fault in the ventilation system.

A statement from the HSE confirmed that the department “has been safely and temporarily evacuated, as a precautionary measure this morning – to facilitate correction of a fault identified in the ventilation system.”

Patients are being treated at the Medical Assessment Unit and the Stroke Therapy area of the hospital as a precaution.

“St. Luke’s GH wishes to assure patients/clients and the general public that every effort is being made to minimize any inconvenience. Normal services in the hospital are not affected,” said the statement

The public are advised, however, that as the ED area will remain closed over the next three hours and due to the hospital consequently being exceptionally busy today that they should in the first instance present to their GP as an alternative to attending the ED at St. Luke’s GH. Acute emergencies continue to be prioritised.

St. Luke’s GH has apologised for any inconvenience.
