SINN Fein’s Kathleen Funchion put in a very strong performance in the Carlow Kilkenny constituency. Cllr Funchion received over 5% of first preference votes and another 2,000 votes in transfers.

Cllr Funchion said that she was delighted with her performance in the general election. She said “We increased our vote massively so we’re delighted with our performance we were coming fro a very low base of only having a single borough council seat. I really want to thank everyone who voted for us and all the volunteers that came out to help us on the campaign.”

Cllr Funchion was the second last candidate eliminated on the eleventh count, with only sitting TD Bobby Ayleward receiving more votes than her before being eliminated. The Carlow Kilkenny branch of Sinn Fein have been so encouraged by the result that they are lobbying party headquarters for a full time Sinn Fein employee for the constituency.

“With the Sinn fein TD’s only taking the average industrial wage and the excess being returned to the party we are hoping that with more resources we’ll be able to get some one working full time in Carlow Kilkenny. Now that the resources are their we’ll be lobbying our heads off to try and get some one for Carlow Kilkenny.”

Sinn Fein are now looking forward to the local elections when they hope to run a candidate in every area. “In the local elections we’ll be hoping to get more council seats in both Carlow and Kilkenny on the back of our vote. We’ll be running candidates in all the areas hoping to get the people represented,” she said.
