Presentation Secondary School Senior Choir travelled to Sligo earlier in the month to compete in the Sligo International Choral Festival.
The choir is made up of 83 girls ranging from third year to sixth year. They entered two competitions.
First up was the ‘Tony McConnnell Memorial Cup’. The girls sang two beautiful pieces ‘Gaudete’ and ‘Carol of the Bells’. Up against choirs from all over the country, the girls gave an outstanding performance, winning the cup and a €200 cheque.
Later on in the day, the choir took part in their second competition, ‘The Sligo Tourist Board Trophy’, singing ‘Dulaman’ by Irish Composer Michael McGlynn and ‘Adieamus’ by Welsh Composer Karl Jenkins.
The standard in this competition was even higher than the previous one, and included a choir from Wesley College in Dublin, but once again the Presentation girls showed their true class and were delighted to again take first place. The judges described the performance as ‘mind-blowing’,and way beyond the standard of a school choir.
As a thank you for the hospitality of the Sligo International Choral Festival, the Presentation Senior Choir sang at the local shopping centre where they were admired by all the shoppers.
The girls, under the direction of the renowned Veronica McCarron, worked extremely hard over the past couple of months. They practiced before school, after school, weekends and several times during the mid-term break. This huge achievement is nothing more than they deserve.
