The first-ever Kilkenny Summer Fair takes place this weekend in the grounds of St Canice’s Cathedral and the walled garden beside the Deanery.

From 11am, the people of Kilkenny will be arriving to partake in a very special day featuring a number of unique attractions. It’s also a rare opportunity to get inside the ‘Secret Walled Garden of Kilkenny’ – which even many locals will have never seen.

For bargain hunters, there will be stalls to browse; for those searching for some furniture, there will be restored antiques for sale; for green-fingered adults there is the plant stall – not to mention the unique dolls boutique, books, children’s toys, bric-a-brac, ladies’ accessories, adult and children’s clothing and baby equipment and more.

There will be beautiful home made cakes, preserves and goodies on sale, while those who are good at guessing weights might even go home with a homemade cake or a lamb for their freezer. Refreshments will be served all day, including a barbeque.

Younger attendees will be entertained with face painting, nail painting, an art competition, a climbing wall, ‘guess the name of the doll’ and many more field games. Then, at 12pm, attention will turn to the Medieval round tower, where dozens of teddy bears will parachute from its summit. Local schoolchildren will bring their own teddies they have rigged with parachutes made at home and in school.

There will also be a raffle worth over €1500 to be drawn. Prizes include a €500 travel voucher, a Dublin hotel break, other shopping vouchers, a painting by Mildred Weekes, meal vouchers and other vouchers for a variety of restaurants, hotels and clubs in County Kilkenny and further afield.

The parishioners of the Kilkenny Union of Parishes have spent weeks preparing for this – one of the biggest fundraising events to be held in recent years.

The Kilkenny Summer Fair will run on Saturday, June 7 from 11am to 4pm, and looks set to be an affordable and entertaining day out for all the family. Admission will be €2 for adults and €1 for children (must be accompanied by an adult).
