Windgap pensioner killed in house fire

A WOMAN was killed in a tragic house fire at her home close to Windgap on Friday shortly before lunchtime on Friday.

A WOMAN was killed in a tragic house fire at her home close to Windgap on Friday shortly before lunchtime on Friday.

Neighbours had called to the home of Bernie Cullen (67), a cousin of local county councillor, Matt Doran just hours before the fire broke out. The woman was believed to have been in bed when the blaze broke out and her remains were found in her bedroom.

Two units of Kilkenny Fire Service attended the scene at Butlersgrove, a rural townsland two miles outside Windgap. A forensic examination was carried out at the scene and gardai are treating the fire as an accident. The deceased’s remains were taken to Waterford Regional Hospital where a post mortem took place.

Her funeral Mass took place yesterday (Tuesday) at St Nicholas Church in Windgap. “This is a very sad event and her thoughts and prayers are with her and her family. I would like to thank all her neighbours and friends for their help and support,” he said.

Ms Cullen is survived by her son who lives in the UK and her extended family. Her son, Eamon who was unable to attend the funeral sent a message to be read out on his behalf thanking the people of Windgap for their care, support and community spirit.
