Fine Gael TD John Paul Phelan has welcomed news that planning has been approved for the €800,000 community centre in Mullinavat, €255,000 of which will come under the Rural Development Programme for Kilkenny LEADER Partnership.
“Isolation and loneliness are very real threats, particularly in rural communities. This state-of-the-art facility will be a fantastic focal point for the community and a great place for people of all ages to meet, mix and mingle,”the Ferrybank based Deputy said.
“It is ideally located, next to the primary school and will be an invaluable indoor facility for the pupils of Mullinavat who up to now have had no alternative play area on rainy days. This project includes a general purpose community centre which will be used by a variety of groups catering for everyone from the very young to our senior citizens as well as a multi-functional sports hall and store rooms. The facility will help foster and grow the great community spirit which has always characterised Mullinavat,” he added.
He pointed out that a significant amount of finance will have to be raised locally. “I have every faith in the tireless community leaders and volunteers who have brought us to this juncture. I commend them all and look forward to continuing to support the project any way I can,” Deputy Phelan said
