TWENTY ONE soldiers from Stephens Barracks in Kilkenny are saying goodbye to their families and friends today as they prepare to fly to Lebanon for a six month tour.

Lieutenant Kieran Brennan, son of the Head of HR for the Defence Forces, Colonel Kieran Brennan and nephew of Comdt Canice Brennan is one of the troops travelling abroad.

Siblings Sergeant Darren Nolan and Private Amy Nolan from Castlecomer who are part of the batallion are also following in a strong family tradition as their father Michael was also a member of the Defence Forces and served overseas on a number of occasions.

The 332 troops of the 108th Batallion will join 177 Finnish Soldiers deployed by their country are an integral part of the IRISHFINN Battalion. Both Ireland and Finland share a common, solid reputation in peacekeeping worldwide as well trained and impartial professionals. Irish and Finnish Troops have most recently served together in joint units in Kosovo and Chad.
