Gardai are investigating the theft of approximately €5,000 worth of jewellery from a premises off High Street, writes Mary Cody.

Marie-Therese Walker is the woman behind MTW Jewellery, which was targeted by criminals in recent days. She has been open for business on the Market Slip for the past three years. Her workshop was broken into early last week and many of her uniquely-designed and hand made pieces were stolen.

“The jewellery taken all had semi precious gem stones set in sterling silver with 18ct yellow gold embellishment. They cannot be melted down or sold for scrap so the monetary value is from the creative process rather than the worth of the metal. The value of the work comes from the time that they took to make. Some of the pieces took her weeks to finish,” said the artist.

“As a small business I put every piece of profit I get into making new stock. It might not be a lot for some people but to me it is everything. This is a massive set back and I am heart broken thinking of what has become of the pieces that I put so much into”, she added.

Gardai are appealing to anyone with information to contact them on (056) 777 5000.
