305 new buildings added in Kilkenny last year

There were 305 new residential and commercial buildings added in County Kilkenny last year, but that growth was 8% smaller than in 2010, according to a national directory.

The total number of buildings in Kilkenny is now 40,011, according to GeoDirectory, which was set up by An Post and Ordnance Survey Ireland to create a complete database of commercial and residential buildings.

Of the new buildings recorded in Kilkenny, 274 were residential buildings, 21 were commercial buildings and 10 were dual-purpose buildings with both residential and commercial space.

“While figures for the first six months of 2011 showed a return to growth in 11 counties, only five of these sustained this growth through to the end of the year. The overall national picture continues to show a year-on-year decline in building additions,” said GeoDirectory general manager Dara Keogh.

“This downward trend follows a peak in 2007 when 96,000 buildings were added to the GeoDirectory database. Since then, the number of additions to the database has continued to fall, resulting in a drop of 87% in new building additions over the last five years.”
