€50,000 in funding for ‘Medieval Mile’

Fáilte Ireland is giving up to €50,000 towards planning for a “Medieval Mile” in Kilkenny city and has indicated that further money could be made available later this year.

A letter to the county manager from Fáilte Ireland has confirmed that the agency is awarding a grant “to support a comprehensive review of the above project resulting in a master plan document which will guide the full implementation of the project.”

The letter from the agency’s chairman, Redmond O’Donoghue, adds: “I look forward to the completion of the Master Plan over the coming months, and subject to the evaluation of the tourism and economic benefits associated with the project, I look forward in turn to Fáilte Ireland cooperating with Kilkenny County Council in the implementation of this important initiative later this year.”

At Monday night’s meeting of Kilkenny Borough Council, county manager Joe Crockett welcomed the “very strong indication of intent”, and Fáilte Ireland’s head of operations for the South East, Gary Breen, said: “It is an absolute priority within Fáilte Ireland and I am delighted to be in a position to inject this type of project in Kilkenny.”

The proposed “Medieval Mile” includes works such as an upgrade of the city’s High Street, the development of St Mary’s Church into a museum-standard space for archaeology and heritage exhibitions, the renovation of Evans Home to house an expanded Butler Gallery of contemporary art, and an upgrade of the public spaces at the Kilkenny Design Centre.
