€720,000 for councillors’ payments and expenses in 2011

Over €720,000 was paid to the 26 members of Kilkenny County Council last year in payments and expenses, according to figures provided by the council.

This includes a standard payment of €16,666.78 to each member for the year. Now-TD Ann Phelan and now-Senator Pat O’Neill are included, because they were members of the council at the start of 2011. Their replacements, Tommy Prendergast and Jane Galway, received proportional payments for the percentage of the year on the council.

A member’s annual allowance covers travel expenses to and from meetings, subsistence, telephone and postage costs; and the education and training covers conference fees, conference travel and overnight expenses.

Each chairperson of the council’s five strategic policy committees (SPCs) received €6,000 for the role.

Marie Fitzpatrick (Lab): €32,275.45, including representational payment of €16,666.78, annual allowance of €4,390.80, training and education allowance of €3,006.97, vice chairperson’s allowance of €2,210.90, and SPC chairperson’s allowance of €6,000

Maurice Shortall (Lab): €32,098.69, including representational payment of €16,666.78, annual allowance of €4,542.88, training and education allowance of €4,889.03, and SPC chairperson’s allowance of €6,000

Pat Millea (FG): €31,582.18, including representational payment of €16,666.78, annual allowance of €4,390.80, training and education allowance of €4,524.60, and SPC chairperson’s allowance of €6,000
