A tempestuous and tantalising 10 years of Dreamstuff
DREAMSTUFF Youth Theatre is preparing to put on a year-long programme to mark its 10th anniversary, including several local productions and a performance in Wales.
Formed by Mike Kelly in 2000, Dreamstuff Youth Theatre has gone from strength to strength with at least two full-scale productions every year.
Now, under the title of Dreamstuff 10, the programme is due to be launched with a huge one-night show on September 25 in the Watergate Theatre. That night will see performances of scenes from all 20 Dreamstuff plays from the last 10 years.
Reprising a large number of parts will be a cast including Trev Anderson, Angela Barrett, Philip Brennan, Alex Christle, Stephen Colfer, Ross Costigan, John Doran, Alan Doyle, Amy Dunne, Stacey Dunne, Sean Hackett, Mairead Kiernan, Ken McGuire, John Morton, Aoibhin Murphy, Michael Murphy, Sorcha O'Boyle, Suzanne O'Brien, Peter O'Connor, Jack O'Leary, Paddy O'Leary, David Thompson and Jessica Walsh.
The last of the plays will be Dreamstuff’s 20th production, which is due to arrive in the Watergate Theatre from December 15-19. Andersen’s Fairytales: The Adventures of Hans Christian Andersen will be the group’s first theatrical sequel, following up their hugely successful 2004 show Grimm’s Fairytales: The Adventures of the Brother’s Grimm. The story will see the famous Danish playwright pitched into a wild fairytale adventure with his own creations. It is written by Hans Christian Andersen and adapted into English by John Morton; artistic director Angela Barrett will be taking the reins for it.
For the first time ever, audiences will be able to hear Dreamstuff’s members performing on KCLR 96fm with two radio plays, which will be broadcast by the year’s end.
The group will finish off 2010 with a reading of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol, which will take place with a full choir and a few famous faces putting their voices to the classic tale. The once-off performance promises to spread festive cheer in December.
Dreamstuff will then be travelling abroad for the first time in spring 2011, when they will take part in the National Theatre’s Connections programme. This will see them performing in the Wales Millennium Centre in April.
Rounding off the anniversary year, June 2011 will see Dreamstuff performing the fourth annual Shakespeare in the House festival. In a major first, they will be performing Shakespeare’s The Tempest – the play after which Dreamstuff Youth Theatre was named.
