Adrian Ronan case moved to Dublin

A JUDGE has ruled that it would be ‘manifestly unjust’ for the case involving a man charged with the false imprisonment of former county hurler Adrian Ronan to be heard in Kilkenny.
Stephen Freeman of 3 Balcurris Gardens, Ballymum is charged with false imprisonment of the Ronan family at Ballyhendricken, Ballycallan on November 3, 2009 and of attempted theft and possession of a firearm at the same location on the same date.
An application was made before Judge Alice Doyle this afternoon to have the case, which was listed to be heard at the current sittings of Kilkenny Criminal Circuit Court to be moved to Dublin Circuit Criminal Court. Freeman’s barrister told the court that the alleged injured party is a well known hurler with two All-Ireland titles, three Leinster titles and a National Hurling League title. “Everyone in Kilkenny would know him and I don’t think my client would get a fair trial,” his barrister said adding that ‘hurling is religion in Kilkenny’ and that the case had received ‘media saturation’.
Judge Alice Doyle ruled on the application that the case be moved to Dublin Circuit Criminal Court. She said that it would be ‘manifestly unjust’ for the case to be heard in Kilkenny because of the profile of the people involved.
