Age Friendly programme comes to city

FORMER GAA Presidnet Nicky Brennan chaired the latest event on the tour of Age Friendly Kilkenny when it was held in Hotel Kilkenny yeterday, Tuesday.

Already the tour has visited most of the county and will conclude in Graignamangh this Thursday as Kilkenny is one of only two counties nationwide chosen to be the first to introduce the scheme.

The response to date has been excellent, and a presentation was made yesterday by Dr Emer Ahern, Geriatrician at St Lukes Hospital. Guests were also invited to lunch and entertained by The Garda Band at the Hotel afterwards.

In March Kilkenny People columnist Nicky Brennan launched the Kilkenny Age Friendly County Programme which aims to focus discussion on the kind of society that is desirable and achievable for older adults in Kilkenny.

It is increasingly important to have a clear understanding of the needs, circumstances and experiences of older persons and to have appropriate and effective policy frameworks in place.

In keeping with this development, a consultation inviting citizens around the county is taking place during July. Its objectives are to

give older adults and their organisations a strong sense that their views will influence the final strategy, to dentify how the various stakeholders and older persons and their organisations can contribute to the programme

Identify mechanisms by which the older adult in Kilkenny can become a genuine partner in the ongoing design and delivery of services in the County, to build support and interest among older persons and other stakeholders in the programme.

It is also hoped to ensure that the priorities and ambitions of all key stakeholders, particularly older adults and their organisations are reflected strongly in the Age Friendly County Strategy for Kilkenny

The remaining dates are

Wednesday 21st July St Joseph’s Home Kilmoganny 2pm

Inistioge School House 7pm

Thursday 22nd July Ferrybank Belmont 11am

Graignamanagh Duiske Inn 2pm
