Almost €10 million allocated to roads

ALMOST €10 million has been allocated for local roads in Kilkenny over the coming year by the National Roads Authority.

Among the most welcome projects outlined in the works plan is €100,000 for works to the Quay Wall in Thomastown, Fine Gael Deputy John Paul Phelan said. It’s a project he’s been anxious to have addressed for quite some time. “A schedule of works has been proposed as part of this allocation and I’m particularly glad to see the finance allocated for these long-awaited and much needed works along the Quay Wall in Thomastown.

“The improvement works outlined in a €705,000 improvement works section of the plan for the coming year also include a spend of €410,000 for the Kells Road where work is also needed. There’s a further €150,000 for bridge inspections in the region as well as €4.85 million for separate restoration and improvement works right across the region,” he said.

“While we’ve not endured as harsh a Winter as last year, I am acutely aware that road surfaces and road standards in some parts of Kilkenny have deteriorated in recent months and I’m anxious that these improvement works might commence as soon as weather permits,” Deputy Phelan added.

Labour Deputy Ann Phelan has also welcomed the 2012 Maintenance and Improvement grants and particularly welcomed the statement that these grants provided through the NRA, guarantee that surface dressing will match the 2011 allocation.

A number of specific projects were allocated funding including Rogerstown Bridge (€50,000), Uskerty Bridge (€20,000), Harristown Bridge (€35,000), Quay Wall, Thomastown (€100,000), Moatepark Bridge (€30,000) and Grange Lower Bridge (€60,000).

Low cost safett improvement works will also take place on a number of regional and local roads including Ballinlammy, Glenmore (€10,000), Ballyhale South (€20,000), Ballyline Cross (€12,000), Blackstone Bridge Junction (€19,500), Clogh Village (€27,000), Granges Road (€50,000), Rose Inn Street (€25,000) and Togher Road Urlingford (€25,000).
