Barnstorm theatre for youth and adults

THE Kilkenny-based Barnstorm Theatre Company is seeking new members to its two youth theatre groups and its adult theatre club.

Barnstorm’s two youth theatre groups meet weekly, with a focus on intensive theatre training and creating original and innovative performances centred on children and young people.

The Youth Theatre provides its members with an array of workshops mainly focused on acting skills, but also delving into directing, writing, lighting and more. Each group runs weekly and produces at least one public performance a year. The workshops are facilitated mainly by Barnstorm’s outreach officer, Anna Galligan. Anna was member of a youth theatre, has trained and worked as a professional actor and created Ireland’s only full-time accredited drama facilitation course, ArtsTrain.

The Junior Youth Theatre runs weekly on Mondays from 4-5.30pm and caters for ages 10-12 years; it starts back up on September 13. The Senior Youth Theatre runs weekly on Tuesdays from 5.30-7.30pm and caters for those in secondary school, ages 13 and up. The Senior Youth Theatre will be holding an open workshop audition on September 7; places are limited so booking is essential.

The annual membership fee for Youth Theatre members is f75 and there is a charge of f5 per weekly workshop (a limited number of scholarships are available). All money taken in goes back into the youth theatre. Anyone interested in either Youth Theatre can contact Anna on 056 7751266 or anna@barnstorm.ie for more information.

Adult Theatre Club

Barnstorm’s Adult Drama Club, meanwhile, has new name and is looking for new members.

After guiding and training two highly active and successful Adult Drama Clubs, Barnstorm is starting a third adult drama programme renamed Adult Theatre Club. The Adult Theatre Club will be a two-year training programme for those whose wish to explore, investigate and create theatre.

An information evening for anyone interested in joining the club will be held on September 8 at 7pm at The Barn, Barnstorm’s premises behind St Canice’s Cathedral, followed by an informal chat about the club’s artistic programme. Then, starting on September 15 from 7-9pm, the club will run weekly thereafter.

In the past, club members have experienced training in everything from improvisation, basic acting and stagecraft to theatre design and scriptwriting. They have performed in Shorts, five one-act plays, at The Barn and performed in a full-scale production of the Irish classic The Whiteheaded Boy by Lennox Robinson at the Watergate Theatre. More recently the club produced ‘Anything… But Peig’, a rich tapestry of Irish writers.

The previous groups have evolved, with the support of Barnstorm’s artistic director Philip Hardy, into the very successful group, The Barn Owl Players, who have brought Kilkenny a range of new theatrical experiences such as ‘Hallowe’en Tales’ and ‘Christmas Tales’. They also launched their ‘Annual Festival of One-Acts’ in the June of this year. Plans are currently taking place for their new programme for the coming year.

“No experience is necessary just a keen interest, an open mind and a willingness to try new things” says outreach officer Anna Galligan. “The training will give members a broad range of skills and a deeper understanding of the full process behind creating theatre. The first year will focus on actors training and will include at least one public performance. It’s a great way to learn about theatre, about yourself and to meet new people.”
