Brothers win defamation action

TWO BROTHERS who were called ‘a pair of paedophiles’ by the chairman of Kilkenny Hunt were awarded €30,500 in damages at Kilkenny Circuit Court, Mary Cody writes.

Hubert and Norman Daniels, Rathielty, Rathmoyle took the action against Edward (Ned) Norris, Danesrath, Knocktopher.

It was alleged that Mr Norris had called the brothers ‘a pair of paedophiles’ on November 12, 2004. The defendant claimed that he had said that the brothers were ‘acting like a pair of paedophiles’. A counterclaim for intimidation and harassment was struck out by Judge Tom Teehan.

Judge Teehan remarked that it was ‘by any measure a most unusual case’. For full report and judgement see this week’s Kilkenny People.
