Castle Annaghs for sale for €16m following failed development bid

ONE of the finest farms in County Kilkenny is on the market with a price tag of 16 million euro.

The 555 acre Castle Annaghs estate outside Rosbercon and just a few miles from New Ross has been put on the market by German-born owner Tomas Jebbens who has connections with the Volkswagen motor car company. He is retiring from farming and his decision comes nine months after An Bord Pleanala refused planning for a 100 million euro development on the magnificent grounds.

Last year, after a wait of over two years, An Bord Pleanala finally rejected plans for the golf course, 80-bedroom hotel, retirement home and luxury homes.

Although nobody locally objected to the plan, and local politicians including Senator John Paul Phelan, supported it enthusiastically, the Department of the Environment objected to it. It is understood the decision to sell is linked to the unsuccessful attempt to develop it as golf and retirement village. The property is for sale by tender and comes with a 165,000 gallon milk quota, a dairy herd and six Aberdeen Angus bulls.

The farm land has been valued at 29,000 euro per acre. Located on the main N25 between New Ross and Waterford, the estate includes several recorded monuments and two protected structures, the 18th century Annaghs house and the ruins of the 16th century Annaghs Castle.

Philip Carton of P.N. O'Gorman Ltd of New Ross who is handling the sale said it is likely to appeal to a successful farmer or to someone looking for a trophy home.
