NIALL CODY has been named as one of the country’s top tax officials. Management must run in the Cody genes, as Niall who will be over-seeing the running of the Revenue Commissioners is a brother of Brian Cody the Kilkenny Senior Hurling manager.

The Government said that Niall Cody has replaced Michael O’Grady as one of the three Revenue Commissioners who run the country’s tax collection operations from offices in Dublin Castle. Mr Cody was appointed to his new position on Tuesday evening by the Taoiseach, Enda Kenny.

Although he was never a hurler himself , Niall Cody is a strong supporter of the Kilkenny team.

He takes up the post as the Revenue Commission tries to recover from a disastrous public relations blunder that saw the agency send thousands of threatening letters to pensioners who had paid all their taxes as well as tens of thousands more to pensioners who had accidentally failed to pay taxes on pensions.

The Cody family are well used to fighting back after set backs. Despite failing to secure the drive for five, Brian Cody, came back as Kilkenny manager and led his team to victory against Tipperary.

Mr Cody’s new position will be for a period of seven years but may be renewed. The position carries an annual salary of €180,000.
