Deer carcass is dumped on Kilkenny roadside
Mary Cody
GARDAI are investigating the dumping of a deer carcass, recently discovered close to Paulstown on the side of the N9.
The remains of the animal were left beside the main N9 in full view of motorists travelling the Kilkenny to Dublin road not far from the village of Paulstown.
The deer appears to have been shot and it is believed that it was transported to the area in which it was found.
Deer are a protected species under the Wildlife Acts, and can only be culled under licence from the National Parks and Wildlife Service. The killing of deer at night by lamping or coursing with dogs is illegal.
The Wild Deer Association of Ireland which represents trained, insured and law abiding deer hunters and who has been promoting a campaign against the illegal poaching of wild deer issued a statement said: "We unreservedly condemn this type of mindless and dangerous activity. We call upon the authorities to pursue and prosecute more vigorously those who under take in these illegal activities throughout the country".
