End of milk quota could bring €50m a year to Kilkenny
The expansion of the milk production sector when the EU quota comes to an end in 2014 could bring a boost of €50 million per year to the Kilkenny economy, according to the county manager.
“The biggest economic capture that the county could potentially make,” Mr Joe Crockett said at Monday’s meeting of Kilkenny County Council.
“It could add €50 million per year into the Kilkenny economy.
“That is being researched at the moment,” he said as part of an update about the county’s Invest Kilkenny economic development strategy.
Nationally, the Department of Agriculture has set a target of a 50% increase in the production of milk and milk products by 2020.
That goal is set out in “Food Harvest 2020,” a “strategic plan drawn up by a committee of industry representatives for the development of the sector over the coming decade.”
Published in 2010 by the Department of Agriculture, the report “outlines the positive prospects for the dairy sector over the medium to long term, and sets an ambitious target of a 50% increase in milk production by 2020.”
