Festival fever hits St Canice’s

St Canice’s Co-Ed National School is experiencing a frenzy of musical activity this week as the 77 members of the A orchestra are busy putting the finishing touches on what promises to be a spectacular performance at the IAYO Festival of Youth Orchestras on Saturday at 8 pm.
On Friday, eight members of the orchestra travelled to RTE to perform for and be interviewed by John Murray -the highlight of which was, following a serious effort to grab his attention through much waving in his studio window, Ryan Tubridy came out to meet the children. Following the RTE visit, the eight young musicians made a swift journey to the National Concert Hall for a photo shoot to launch the Festival 2012.
This year’s orchestra have chosen a very challenging programme, including a variety of musical genres. They will perform Peasant Dance by Charles Woodhouse; Emperor’s Waltz by Strauss; Can You Feel the Love Tonight from The Lion King and the theme tune from Star Wars.
The string section of the orchestra will then perform the hugely popular Palladio for Strings by Karl Jenkins. For the finale they have chosen to play Charles Woodhouse’s The Valiant Knight. The orchestra shall be under the direction of Ruth O’Leary, who is making her debut as an orchestral conductor at the National Concert Hall. Preparation for this performance began in September and huge credit is due to all involved, children, parents and all the music teachers from St. Canice’s Co-Ed National School. Kilkenny’s first citizen, Mayor David Fitzgerald will be in attendance ot and it should be a night when many musical memories will be made.
