Gang wreaks havoc in Callan pub
THOUSANDS of euro worth of damage was wreaked on a pub in Callan on Saturday night when a group of youths trashed the licensed premises.
Up to forty youths, from Grangemockler, Windgap, Carrick on Suir and surrounding townslands arrived in the town on Saturday evening for a night out. Within hours the interior of a pub had been severely damaged and two other premises in the town were also damaged.
At around 10pm the group, in their late teens and early twenties entered Scruffy Duffys on Mill Street and according to onlookers ‘went mental’ and ‘caused mayhem’. “They smashed up windows and broke up furniture,” one eye witness said. The front shop window of O’Briens Drapery was also smashed in as was the window of the takeaway, Chips and Co.
Local gardai arrived at the scene but back up was also needed from Kilkenny. However it is believed that a number of people involved in the incident had fled before gardai arrived.
A garda spokesman confirmed that there had been an incident in Callan and that ‘considerable damage’ had been caused. “There was a row in a pub in the town and the premises was broken up. No one was arrested at the scene but names and addresses were taken and identifications were verified. Our investigation into the incident is continuing and we expect to make a number of arrests,” a garda spokesman said. No formal complaints of assault have been made to gardai but local gardai are advising anyone who has information or wishes to make a complaint in relation to the incident to contact them on (056) 772 5232
