Geckos and iguanas in Gowran - w/e 5 May 06
Dublin, London, Berlin and now Gowran! Yes, for a memorable visit to a reptile zoo you need to go no further now than our own village.
Courtesy of James Hennessy, a collector and devotee of reptiles, invertebrates and amphibians for the past 20 years, a reptile village is now situated at the Demense. On St Patrick's Day the doors of this amazing menagerie opened to the public and James put his living exhibits on display in specially constructed units. They reveal creatures from a South American tarantula, a Burmese python, a North African horned viper, a boa constrictor, and a Tanzanian black-throat monitor to iguanas, geckos, chameleons and even a Central American crocodile. In their specially heated quarters the creatures are currently being cared for by three employees, Pam, Nick and Thomas. James himself is a native of Callan now living in Bennettsbridge. He is very pleased with the visitor rate at the village to date. He says that children are finding the experience of getting close up to the reptiles fascinating and he stresses that groups are welcome with advance booking, special rates and a personalised tour. The assistants are very informative and enthusiastic and under their supervision the children (and brave adults too!) may have a hands-on experience with the creatures. The facility is open every day from 10am to 6pm. Pop into the reptile village for an educational and entertaining view of these exotic creatures. It is well signposted. As you take the road towards Dublin from Gowran, turn right onto the Goresbridge road at the top of the village. A right turn brings you into the Demense and into a world of reptilian wonder.
