Hazel and David in different camps

Sean Keane

AS they strolled around the vintage section of the Iverk Show in Piltown on Saturday afternoon, Hazel Hickey and her boyfriend, David Cormack received huge attention with people watching them intensely.

Not because they are a good looking couple, (which they are) but because Hazel, from Windgap, Co Kilkenny and David from Drangan, Co Tipperary were wearing their respective county jerseys at what is Ireland’s oldest agricultural show.

They looked adoringly into each others eyes as they stopped at a Rover car from the 1970s, lovingly restored by Sean Doheny of Cuffesgrange. Maybe they were thinking of using it as their mode of transport for a future, but as yet unannounced, wedding. Let’s hope Sunday’s result doesn’t affect their relationship because the minute the All Ireland senior hurling final between Kilkenny and Tipperary was mentioned, their body language changed

“Of course we are going to do it,” Hazel said confidently. “Not a hope,” quipped David who added there would be a lot of crying in Kilkenny after Sunday’s final. “Nonsense,” she said maintaining her smile and poise.

“She would want to watch her step,” he countered jokingly to no one in particular before they both started laughing.

Despite the sparring Hazel and David will sit next to each other at the game (the tickets came from Tipp) but both added that there is no guarantee they will be talking to each other at the end of it. Hazel is a distant cousin of the Hickeys of Dunnamaggin and of course full-back, Noel Hickey is a firm favourite with her while David is every bit as serious about his native county. “It will be 50-50 but Tipperary will win it in the end, definitely,” he said.

The couple met six years ago in Nero’s night club on Kieran Street, Kilkenny and that have been an item ever since. David said all the Tipp men come to Kilkenny for their women while Hazel, lady-like to the last, just smiled and declined to retaliate to the inflammatory comment which should make the males of the county see red.

As they walked away, Hazel told David that he would want to watch himself over the next week in advance of the match. He just smiled.
