Houses evacuated as fire spread in Kilkenny city

A YOUNG man was rushed to St Luke's hospital, Kilkenny this morning (Sunday) after a house fire in the city.

Four homes at the Newpark Close estate, close to the city's Nowlan Park GAA grounds, were evacuated as fears mounted that the blaze would get out of control and destroy the complete row of houses.

Four units of Kilkenny fire service fought the flames to ensure it did not spread to adjoining homes in the terraced estate while hundreds of local residents looked on.

Cars were moved and a large area of Newpark Close was cordoned off by the gardai during the emergency operation.

Afterwards, affected families were brought to the Newpark Close Family Resource Centre where manager, Sheila Donnelly and local councillors Andrew McGuinness and Joe Malone (FF) co-ordinated the response to the incident. Arrangements are being made to accommodate the families in local hotels tonight before the issue of rehousing them is addressed on Monday by Kilkenny County Council.
