Industrial action disrupts events at Kilkenny Castle

EVENTS and concerts scheduled to take place at Kilkenny Castle will have to be cancelled or moved after public sector staff began industrial action on Monday.

OPW staff at the Castle including tour guides, cleaners, security workers and those in general operations, have commenced work-to-rule action which will mean difficulties in hosting after-hours events.

The OPW has confirmed that some events will not be able to go ahead in the Castle.

"SIPTU has informed local management that their members will not be available to work overtime hours for evening events," an OPW spokesperson said. "As such, events held on an occasional basis, require overseeing and stewarding cannot be accommodated. The OPW regrets any inconvenience."

Several events set to take place in the Castle this week have already been moved to other venues.

"Any scheduled overtime will continue but unscheduled overtime will not be facilitated," SIPTU Kilkenny's assistant branch organiser Colleen Minihan said. "Staff will not be changing rosters or shifts and from now on all flexility and goodwill has been withdrawn."

A reception for Plan Ireland volunteers originally scheduled for the Parade Tower tonight (Wednesday) will now take place in Harry's Bar at Langton's. A concert by Vyvienne Long on Friday night has also been moved to Harry's Bar, Langton's and a recital by the RTE Van Brugh Quartet will now take place in the Set Theatre.
