John Brennan Snr - An appreciation

JOHN Brennan, Brennan's Grove, Woodsgift passed to his eternal reward on August 12. Sean as he was known, was born on August 31, 1923 to John and Mary Brennan, Ardaloo.

It was here that his many gifts and talents developed. Music played a big part in his life. As a young teenager he played the harmonica in the Desert Hall, Kilkenny for irish dancing, run by Miss Curran of the Gaelic League.

The mandolin, banjo and piano accordion followed.Sean excelled at the banjo and provided memorable entertainment to many a function or gathering and there would be huge disappointment if he was missing at these events.

in the late 1940s he formed a band with his dad, John along with Jack Hennessy, and the late Eddie Phelan and were known as the Dawn Patrol. This band provided much entertainment to the people who attended "Threecastles Dance Board" events in Freshford, Conahy and neighbouring areas.

Fifty one years ago he married the love of his life, Teresa, fondly known as Tess and no words could express their devotion to each other.

They had two children, Virginia and John. He loved his work in his garage in Woodsgift. He was a great mechanic, most inventive who loved a challenge, the bigger it was, the more he liked it. Motorcycles, midget car racing, and vintage cars were his passions and he had a wealth of knowledge on them.

He travelled all over to vintage rallies with his self restored 1923 Morris Cowley, always accompanied by his wife and family. Great sessions followed these events and the music flowed from himself and his friend John Maloney (RIP). He also had a wonderful sense of humour and loved a good yarn and many the good one he spun.

Sean was a modest gentleman who had the privilege of working with his son John and saw him carry on in his footsteps.

He had constant love and affection from all his grandchildren but most of all during his illness, until the time of his death, he was cared for in his own home by his loving wife Tess and family. May all the wonderful memories be a great comfort to them. "Rest in peace our friend."
