K Team's black and amber border patrol is hotting up as Tipp out to 'right the wrongs'

THE K Team will maintain their campaign to ensure the county is aglow with black and amber before Sunday's historic All Ireland senior hurling final between Kilkenny and Tipperary right up until the morning of the match.

They have breathed life into our campaign to win a first ever five-in-a-row and they brought their special brand of fun to Iverk Show, Piltown on Saturday where they mockingly chased youngsters from Tipperary around the showgrounds. They have provided a comic relief to the tension which is mounting between the two teams in advance of the replay of last year’s All Ireland.

Last night (Tuesday) the K team were due to place the county colours at the border between Killamery, between Callan and Ninemilehouse in a scene reminiscent to “Enemy At The Gates” with some volunteers peering through binoculars watching out for “Tippsters.” They have already carried out similar raids at Faugheen, Urlingford, Carrick-on-Suir and Ahenny while thanks to them, Mount Misery, overlooking Waterford city remains black and amber after it had been painted, first, in the blue and white of Waterford and then the blue and gold of Tipperary.

Meanwhile, every possible method of securing a ticket for the most important match Kilkenny will ever play goes on with favours being called in and people coming off planes from the US and Britain being asked in the arrivals hall if they have a spare ticket.

The drive for five has overtaken the city and county. Yes, it looks certain that Henry Shefflin and John Tennyson will play and yes, Mystic Moira, the Bennettsbridge based psychic who has a 100% record in predictions for all GAA matches over the last number of years, has said Kilkenny will win but didn’t say by how much and the question has to be asked, is she hedging her bets and going for a replay?

One thing is for sure, Kilkenny will, probably, never again have an opportunity to win five senior All Ireland titles in a row. And as if the hype wasn’t bad enough, a Westmeath artist has completed a sculpture of Cha Fitzpatrick lifting the Liam McCarthy Cup two years ago.

Let’s not forget Richie Mulrooney and his minor charges who will attempt to set the scene on Sunday by winning the Irish Press Cup and the All Ireland after going so close last year.

Finally, let no one in Kilkenny be under any illusion about the seriousness of the threat posed by Tipperary. To quote Tipp hurler Shane McGrath from an interview on RTE television: “We want to right the wrongs of last year.”
