Kilkenny County Council passes motion in support of legislation for marriage equality
Kilkenny County Council has become the 12th local authority in Ireland to pass a motion in support of legislation for marriage equality.
The motion was proposed by Cllr Malcolm Noonan (Green Party) at the January meeting of the county council. It was seconded by the Cathaoirleach, Marie Fitpatrick.
Cllr Noonan described the motion as a basic human rights issue, and said that the entitlements that are in place for heterosexual couples should be extended to the LGBT community in Ireland. He said that a majority of Irish people now supported legislation for gay marriage and that we were free of the shackles of the conservatism of the past.
“Ireland has moved on in so many ways over the past few decades. It is my belief that we are now a more tolerant, understanding and compassionate society and that we wish to see equality extended to every member of our society,” he said.
“For the many organisations working to promote gender equality in Ireland, this is a proud day. I have asked that my motion be circulated to remaining local authorities and that a grassroots campaign would lead to a momentum being established that would place it onto the Government’s agenda within the lifetime of the current Dáil. I am most grateful to the Cathaoirleach of Kilkenny County Council, Marie Fitzpatrick, for seconding the motion and to the members of Kilkenny County Council for supporting it.”
