Kilkenny’s Oscars connection
Not content with last year’s Cartoon Saloon Oscar nomination, Kilkenny can lay claim to this year’s Academy Awards as well – nominated director Peter McDonald’s father hails from Mullinavat and his first cousin will be cheering him on from his Kilkenny city centre pub.
Peter is from Dublin himself, but his father Richie is from Mullinavat. Peter’s mother Brenda Costigan is no stranger to the screen either, having appeared on Live at 3 and Master Chef Ireland.
His first cousin John McDonald owns The Field pub and is a former Kilkenny hurler.
Also known for his acting work including I Went Down, Peter is the writer and director of Pentecost, which has been nominated for an Oscar in the Short Film (Live Action) Category. It will be up against Irish film The Shore in the same category when the 84th Academy Awards ceremony takes place on February 26.
