Kilkenny women get more pleasure than men
WOMEN in Kilkenny have more pleasure in their lives than their male counterparts, according to the results of a new survey.
Bucking a national trend that shows men get more pleasure than women, Kilkenny's fairer sex are feeling footloose and fancy-free far more often than those with a Y chromosome.
Proving the old adage 'girls just wanna have fun', a survey carried out by ice-cream company Magnum showed local women have a 'pleasure quotient' (PQ) of 145, while Marble City men only score 140.
Around the country, Irish men were found to experience more pleasure than Irish women.
On average, Kilkenny people have a PQ of 144, proving they are significantly happier than neighbours Carlow who only scored 115. But locals were found wanting against people from Wexford who scored a massive 159.
In the Battle of the Profession, business people in Kilkenny appear to be enjoying life more than everyone else, with the study revealing that people working in business and finance have the highest PQ scores, with an average of 200.
Conversely, life as a student obviously isn't as fun and free as it seems, with unhappy local students clocking up the lowest ranking of just 114.
Music was the clear winner when in it comes to giving pleasure in Kilkenny and second to this was the ambiguously-named 'personal time' - which more people said they enjoyed than accomplishment in life.
Around the world, the Irish ranked ninth when it came to the pleasure enjoyed by different nations and the survey showed those planning on emigrating to sunnier climes may want to reconsider, as popular destinations like Australia (111) and New Zealand (105) have a far lower PQ score, indicating they enjoy far less pleasure in their lives.
The Pleasure Quotient test was developed by a psychologist at the University of Leicester, Professor Alex Linley and his team.
Professor Linley's research identified the existence of 10 different pleasure triggers - ranging from taste sensations to physical arousal - and created the PQ scale based on the frequency and intensity to which an individual is stimulated by these triggers.
"The Magnum PQ test has been a phenomenal success - people are genuinely interested in finding out more about how much pleasure they're currently receiving and how they can increase their pleasure potential and it's fantastic to be able to assess the state of the world's pleasure - something that hasn't been done before," says Professor Alex Linley, Magnum's Professor of Pleasure.
"Life is too short to not be enjoying it."
More than 100,000 people from 180 different countries were surveyed for the study.
