Lap-dancing club to remain closed

AFTER months of defying protesters and massive refurbishment of their Parliament Street premises, it appears that the owners of Kilkenny's only lap-dancing club will shut their doors without a whisper.

An Bord Pleanala decided last week that lap dancing constituted a change of use from the terms and conditions of a normal pub licence and that therefore the owners of Whispers Lap-dancing Club, which was rebranded as Secrets Lap-dancing Club in recent months, would have to apply to the local planning authority for planning permission.

Director of Planning with Kilkenny Borough Council, John McCormack, had planned to carry out an inspection of the premises and to take enforcement measures to shut it down if necessary. However, the doors of the club have not opened since the news of the planning body's decision filtered through.

"We have not carried out any inspection to date as the club has not been open. If it does reopen our officials will carry out an immediate inspection and take enforcement action if necessary," said Mr McCormack.

The owner of Secrets Lap-dancing club, which has clubs in Cork and Waterford, is quick to point out that he feels unhappy about the way he has been treated by the owners of the Kilkenny club.

"Dave Coughlan and Garvan Lynch approached me about rebranding Whispers and we did and it was known as Secrets. We have taken our name off the door and are completely disassociating ourselves from the Kilkenny club.

"We were always upfront and truthful in our details and I feel very let down by the management of Whis-pers. Since the An Bord Pleanala decision, I have been unable to contact either of the owners," added the owner of Secrets.

Neither Garvan Lynch or Dave Coughlan were available for comment when contacted by the Kilkenny People at the time of going to press.
