Lions clean city with pride

Civic pride is alive and well as the members of Kilkenny Lions club came out to litter pick for Tidy Towns recently.

Spearheaded by new Lions Club president, publican, Kieran Bollard, the litter pickers were joined by Keep Kilkenny Beautiful committee member David FitzGerald.

The group was broken up in to teams by Kilkenny County Council director of services and Lions member Philip O Neill following a health and safety talk.

“The Lions Club is delighted to support the tremendous effort being put in to the 2010 Tidy Towns campaign in the City. We appreciate the significance of Tidy Towns for local tourism and jobs. The Lions club are keen to be part of the big push for success” enthused Kieran.

Sentiments

Similar sentiments were echoed by other Lions members present including VEC chief Rodger Curran and former brewery supremo, Tony Joyce. Litter pickers covered part of Loughboy, Lovers lane, Hebron road and Johnswell road on the night despite heavy showers.

“With the second and final round of judging due to take place in the City in the next 4 weeks, KKB are urging everyone to continue to pick the litter in their area” reminds FitzGerald.

“Many visitors have commented on how well the City is looking at present. KKB have been busy all summer cleaning, painting and litter picking. We recently painted the disused steel railway bridge at Johns Green, Brian Stones premises at Green Street, buildings in John Street, Kieran Street and Irishtown to ensure the City looks its best”.

The Lions club members have promised to come out again during early August to do another clean up. KKB have been in touch with many community groups urging them to continue their good work locally.

Any community group, residents association or individual interested in doing work in their area or helping KKB’s clean up campaign can make contact with David at 086 2514041 or become a friend of Keep Kilkenny Beautiful on facebook or www.keepkilkennybeautiful.ie
