Local magician sweeps the boards

A LOCAL MAGICIAN has swept the boards at the International Brotherhood of Magicians Irish Magic Championships which were held in Belfast earlier this month.

Top professional magicians from around the world managed to avoid the volcanic ash and fly into Belfast to perform and also to judge the Irish Magician of the year championships 2010 for Stage Magic and Close Up or Proximity Magic.

Comedy Magician Nevin Cody, who is originally from Dean Kavanagh Place but now lives in Callan walked away with the prestigious titles for Stage Magician and Close up Magician of the year 2010, a feat achieved by an elite number of Magicians. Nevin was especially proud as the annual trophy for Close up as it is the John Bowden trophy. Magician John Bowden is from Urlingford has been mentor to Nevin and John said “I am really proud of him and delighted to see the award go to Nevin and see the trophy come back home,” John told the Kilkenny People.

Nevin’s love of magic started when as a child his father, John returned home one day with a deck of cards. “It started back then and I suppose I also had an interest in it but it really took off around ten years ago when I went to a magic shop in New York. The owner put me in contact with a number of Irish magicians and I’ve been involved in it since,” he said. “I’m on the amateur circuit at the moment but it is my ambition to turn professional some day. For me it’s all about the audience enjoying themselves whether that’s through proximity magic where you’re doing card tricks in front of them or mentalism where I claim to read members of the audiences minds,” said Nevin who has also been known to saw a human body or two on stage.

Nevins star has been rising within the world of magic in the last number of years and this was a very popular result. He is a member of the “International Brotherhood of Magicians” and Secretary of the” Society of Irish Magicians”. In 2006 Nevin was invited to join the prestigious and world famous “The Magic Circle” an honour bestowed to only a very small number of Irish magicians. He has also attended master classes with the renowned magician, Paul Daniels.

Nevin is resident magician at the “Secret Castle of Magic” in the Bram Stoker museum in Fairview Dublin and also is asked to perform at parties and functions to audiences of all ages and readers may also remember him back in the late eighties as lead singer for the CBS’s double award winning group in the No Name Club Schools Competition. Nevin will perform at a new variety show at Rivercourt Hotel Kilkenny on June 2 and 9 with another local magician, John Phelan in what promises to be a cracking show.
