Local actor crowned Clooney lookalike

A LOCAL actor beat off stiff competition to be crowned ‘lookalike’ to Hollywood heartthrob George Clooney and will get the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to attend the Oscars in Los Angeles in March.
David Glendon will fly over to the prestigious event with Kilkenny-based filmmaker and historian Gabriel Murray, who organised the competition. “My company Olympia Films were allocated four tickets to the Oscars in March so we will be taking David with us. He will also be attending the Irish Film and TV Awards, which are held in Dublin next month. We took into consideration in deciding the winner that David is a local actor,” added Mr Murray, who is on the voting jury for the IFTAs.
The competition was held in Dylan’s Whiskey Bar on John Street last Friday night. In the run up to the event entrants were asked to submit a photograph where they posed and dressed as the legendary actor, whose Kilkenny roots were confirmed late last year. Some 783 entries were received from all over the country and the organisers shortlisted it down to five before announcing the overall winner last Friday night.
“I decided to do it for a bit of craic, for the fun of it,” said winner David Glendon. The 27-year-old, who is currently single, is no stranger to acting, having recently set up Firebird Theatre. “I have been involved in nearly amateur group in the city. Our next production is on in Cleere’s in March,” he said. “I am delighted to have won. To go to the Oscars, well that would be anyone’s dream come true,” he said.
Mr Murray discovered last year that George’s antecedent was a Nicholas Clooney from Windgap. There was some previous investigation in 2008. The baptismal certificate of Nicholas Clooney, George’s sixth-generation ancestor, had not been found. A Fás community employment scheme recently computerised all the birth records in Ireland. When Gabriel discovered the relevant certificate last November, it revealed that Nicholas Clooney was baptised in Windgap church on 23 July 1829 and was from Knockeen, Tullahought.

Thursday, February 2, 2012 at 08:19 PM@clooney1 - Your enthusiasm to debunk the fact that this actor is from George Clooney's lineage is amusing. So what if it's bogus or not? Who honestly cares?

Thursday, February 2, 2012 at 06:16 PMI agree with the previous comment what a farce my dog looks more like George CLOONEY. I think the all the articles published in this paper contain false information can't wait to see this documentary or should I say comedy. Many questions will have to be answered about the authenticity of the so called relations hope they have their facts and family trees sorted by then because they are talking codswallop at the moment. Thursday, February 2, 2012 at 05:36 PMWhich guy is supposed to be the George Clooney lookalike ? None of them look remotely like George Clooney so it is a puzzle. As has already been asked, what criteria was used ? Possibly just one ? That he be male and have hair ? I am sure there must have been others closer in looks to the fab George than the guys in the photo. It shows how much a failure it has been that we can't pick out the winner in the photo ! It should be obvious.

Friday, January 20, 2012 at 11:59 AMHello from a George Clooney fansite. We saw your article and want to pass our congratulations to David Glendon on winning this competition. We were wondering what criteria were you using to judge the competition because although he's a good looking man, he doesn't look a whole lot like George Clooney . . .
