Major boost for Grennan College with f300,000 leisure grant
A LENGTHY campaign for much needed gym and leisure facilities at Grennan College in Thomastown, for both the college and the local community, has been successful. A partnership has been established between the college, VEC and the local community and government funding of f300,000 has been secured.
Supported by Deputy John McGuinness, the campaign has already been successful in securing National Lottery funding of f180,000 in 2008 and in addition to that, the Department of Education has agreed to allocate f300k to the project under the umbrella of GC Leisure.
“I’m delighted with this result and to be part of this project for the last number of years. This funding will enable the whole project to take off properly, and it will give the college and the wider community in Thomastown much needed gym and leisure facilities,” said Deputy John McGuinness.
The news was also welcomed by former councillor, Dixie Doyle, who said he had received a personal guarantee from Education Minister Batt O’Keefe that the money would be forthcoming.
“I want to thank the representatives of Grennan College, the VEC and local community activists who helped me to make a case for Thomastown. It took a lot of hard work to achieve this result and it could not have been done without the keen community spirit that has been shown in Thomastown over the last number of years. The project can now move on to planning and construction phase,” Mr Doyle said.
