Massive manhunt for fugitives

GARDAI across the city and county spent a number of hours scouring woodlands for a gang of men who are suspected of being armed and were involved in at least seven burglaries.

On Tuesday afternoon (July 27) following a spate of burglaries in neighbouring county Tipperary gardai in Thomastown were alerted to a suspect vehicle, namely a black Alpha Romeo which was believed to be in the area.

At approximately 3pm a member of the public contacted the gardai and reported a number of men dumping objects out of a car fitting the description at Tullogher. Gardai were at the scene within minutes and gave chase to the suspect vehicle. Finally as the gardai closed in the gang abandoned the vehicle on the Thomastown to Graignamanagh road at Dangean Terrace and took to the fields. “A number of men got out and took to the fields and gardai from the Thomastown and Kilkenny garda divisions were drafted in to search for them,” a garda spokesperson said.

Up to twenty gardai combed the countryside searching for the men who are suspected of being involved in at least seven burglaries across the south of the county earlier in the day. A number of shotguns were taken during the burglaries along with cash and jewellery.

An air support unit was also called in and the garda helicopter was seen hoovering in the skies overhead. At around 7pm there was a suspicious sighting reported by a member of the public at Smithstown and the search continued for a number of hours. The search continued on Wednesday morning and gardai are appealing to members of the public who saw anything suspicious on Tuesday or Wednesday who has any information on the whereabouts of a black Alpha Romeo with a registration number starting with 02 D to contact them on (056) 775 4150.

No arrests have been made and garda are following a number of lines of enquiry. The burglaries took place at a number of locations across the south of the county including Piltown, Glenmore and Kilmacow.
