Medal from Kilkenny's first All-Ireland win is up for grabs

JUST in time for Kilkenny's senior hurling semi-final battle, a medal from the county's first All-Ireland hurling title is up for sale in an auction by Mealy's Auctioneers of Castlecomer next week.

The auction, which will take place on July 29, also includes a rugby ball that is reputed to have been used at Ravenhill when Ireland beat Wales in 1948 to claim their first Grand-Slam.

In addition to the Sporting and Collectors’ Sale, the day will feature an Important Sale of Rare Books and Literary Items, with a highlight being a signed copy of James Joyce’s Ulysses.

A Patrick Kavanagh rarity, The Green Fool, meanwhile was written in the 1930s as an autobiography. He was sued for libel by fellow writer Oliver St John Gogarty for his description of his first visit to his house: “I mistook Gogarty’s white robed maid for his wife or mistress, I expected every poet to have a spare wife.” Gogarty took offence to the words “wife” and “mistress” being so closely coupled, he was awarded 100 for his trouble, and Kavanagh’s work was subsequently withdrawn.

The sale also includes a collection of autographs belonging to the late Michael Stafford TD, with about 200 signatures from the likes of Amelia Earhart, Laurel and Hardy, Charlie Chaplin, Robert Baden-Powell, Charles Lindbergh, Willie Pearse, Sean MacBride and Jack Dempsey.

On the sporting front, the auction will feature a medal from the first ever GAA hurling match in America from 1888, in addition to a selection of GAA programmes from 1937 up to the 1960s for All-Ireland Finals and Provincial Games in football and hurling, and some very early team photographs.

The auction will take place on July 29 at 10.15am in Mealy’s Auction Rooms, Chatsworth Street, Castlecomer. Viewing will take place from 9.30am to 5pm on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday of next week. For details, contact 056 4441229 or email info@mealys.com.
